There are 2 ways to request items through ILL.
If you have the full citation for the item you need, go straight to your ILL account and fill out the request form.
If you do not have the full citation, or unsure of the exact item, you can search for items, and when you find the one you want follow the prompts to make an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Request.
Books: Use WorldCat to search for books, follow the prompt for InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Request, and Request document via ILLiad.
Articles: Use your preferred article database to find the record for the article you need, click “Find it @ CSUDH” in the upper left hand corner, and follow the prompts to Request document via ILLiad.
To ensure that you receive your requested material on time, please submit requests at least two weeks before you need the materials.
Loan periods for Inter-Library Loan items are determined by the lending library. The average loan period is approximately two to three weeks.
To request a renewal of your Inter-Library Loan material, you must select the "request renewal" option under your ILL account, available online here. Renewals can not be processed manually by ILL staff.
Students may have a maximum of 5 items out at any one time through Interlibrary Loan, Faculty may have 12. The limit applies to any combination of Books and Articles.
Items Available for Loan
The following items can usually be requested via Inter-Library Loan:
- Some dissertations and theses
- Journal articles
Inter-Library Loan items may not be borrowed in order to put on the reserves desk or be put to similarly long-term use.
The following items can not be requested via Inter-Library Loan:

- Entire issues of periodicals such as scholarly journals - please request the individual article that you require
- Reference materials, rare books, archival materials
- Audiovisual materials
- Software, hardware, and E-books

Electronic Article Delivery

By logging into the ILLiad system with your MyCSUDH username and password, you can access request history, request item renewals, and also download electronically delivered journal articles. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required in order to view, download, and print any items received via Inter-Library Loan. It comes pre-installed on most computers, but if you do not have it you can get it for free at the following link: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Students may have a maximum of 5 items out at any one time through Interlibrary Loan, Faculty may have 12. Items can be any combination of Books and Articles. If you have reached your max number of items allowed, but have more requested items ready, you must first return books or download articles from your list. Only then will it free up the space for more articles to come through to your list.
Articles disappear from your list once downloaded, or automatically after 2 weeks.
The fine for overdue Interlibrary Loan books is $1 per day. Overdue fines for Inter-Library Loan work the same was as overdue fines for items checked out of the CSUDH Library, and you are required to pay these fines in the normal way at the circulation (book check-out) desk.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
