FRESHMAN ORIENTATION

We are thrilled to welcome you to the Toro family! As part of the enrollment process, all Conditionally Admitted first-time freshmen are required to attend New Student Orientation (NSO). New Student Orientation for first time freshman is held on select dates in June, to ensure students receive advising and enrollment assistance prior to the start of Early Start summer school. The program is designed to answer all of your questions regarding the enrollment process, Early Start summer school, academic advising, and course registration. Our goal is to give you a strong start as you embark on your journey at CSUDH.

NSO is a mandatory enrollment requirement. Students who do not register by the deadline, or students who do not attend, are not eligible to enroll at CSUDH for the academic year in which they applied.

Who Can Attend?

New Student Orientation is for incoming conditionally admitted students. To be eligible to attend NSO, a student must be conditionally admitted to the university, and have met all admission deadlines. Students who did not meet an admission deadline are not eligible to attend NSO. Students who are waitlisted are not eligible to attend NSO until there is a change to their admissions status.

Students are not fully admitted to the university until final transcripts are received. There may be instances where a student attends NSO and there is a change to their admission status following their participation in the program.

Guests are not permitted to attend the student NSO program, unless approved by the NSO Coordinator prior to the event. Guests may only be allowed into the program as an accommodation request. Accommodation requests are limited to serious and compelling reasons; reasons include but are not limited to disability accommodations. If you have a disability and require accommodation for the NSO event, please email orientation@csudh.edu at least 10 days prior to the scheduled NSO date to discuss your accommodation request. This information may also be submitted on the NSO registration form.

Parent/Guardian Program

Freshman NSO offers a parent/guardian program that is separate from the student program. This is a great way to learn about the campus and to receive information about the opportunities that are available to CSUDH students. There is a fee to participate in the Parent/Guardian Program. Registration for the Parent Program occurs through the confirmation email sent after a student successfully registers for NSO. NSO offers an English and Spanish program option for the Parent/Guardian Program.

The Parent Program is designed for parents and guardians to learn more about CSU Dominguez Hills. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from different campus departments. Topics of discussion include information on Early Start, Dominguez Hills First Year Experience programs, Financial Aid, Student Records and Privacy, and more. Participants will work with current students and Outreach and School Relations staff throughout the program to ensure all questions are answered.

Why Should I Attend?

Freshman NSO is mandatory for conditionally admitted students, but it’s also a great introduction to CSUDH and an essential part of your success on campus. At NSO, you will receive:

  1. Hands-on help with online registration for summer and fall courses.
  2. Academic assistance to help students choose the right classes for their degree and interests.
  3. Useful information on financial aid options and how to accept awards.
  4. Introduction to student life, activities, and events happening on campus.
  5. Interactive tours
  6. Answers to questions provided by our friendly student services staff
  7. A CSUDH student I.D.
  8. Information on how to jump-start student course work and requirements through our Dominguez Hills First Year Experience (DHFYE) summer programs.

What Do I Have To Do Before I Attend?

You will need to meet a number of requirements before you can register for Freshman New Student Orientation (NSO):

  1. Activate your my.CSUDH.EDU account. Your login information was included in your acknowledgement letter.
  2. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2 and supporting documentation by May 10, 2018. (Submitting a FAFSA application is not required to attend NSO, however students interested in applying for financial aid should apply prior to the FAFSA deadline)
  3. Submit your Intent to Enroll on MyCSUDH.EDU by May 1.

When is Orientation?

Freshman NSO sessions are scheduled in June. Students may select the date that works best for them, on a first-come, first-serve basis. We recommend reserving your orientation spot online early so you can select dates that meet your schedule. Spaces are limited at each program, so we encourage you to register as soon as you receive the NSO invitation.

We highly recommend not making summer travel plans until after you attend New Student Orientation, as some students will be required to enroll in Early Start summer school. For more information about Early Start summer school, please click here. Travel purposes will not be considered for reasons why a student is unable to attend NSO. Students who do not register by the deadline, or students who do not attend NSO, are not eligible to enroll at CSUDH for the academic year in which they applied.

The orientation program is a full day program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students must stay for the entire program, with no exceptions. Light morning refreshments, lunch and DH gear are provided at NSO.

Students who did not submit the Intent to Enroll by the deadline must contact Admissions and Records regarding the appeal process.

If you believe that you submitted the Intent to Enroll, but did not receive a NSO invitation email by the first week of May, please contact New Student Orientation by emailing orientation@csudh.edu, and include your CSUDH student ID number in your email.

NSO reservations can only be reserved online via email invitation. Students cannot make NSO reservations by email or by phone. Freshman must register for NSO by June 1. How Much Does NSO Cost?

The fee for New Student Orientation is $99. All Orientation fees are non-refundable unless you notify NSO in writing that you will not be attending 10 business days prior to your scheduled orientation date. To notify NSO, email orientation@csudh.edu and include your CSUDH student ID number in your email.

  • If your Admission status changes after you have participated in NSO, your fee remains non-refundable.
  • You remain responsible for the Orientation fee if you decide not to attend CSUDH and do not notify NSO to cancel your reservation at least 10 business days prior to your scheduled NSO date.

I Missed the Deadline to Register for NSO / I Missed My Scheduled NSO Date

NSO is a mandatory enrollment requirement for all incoming students (freshman, transfer, returning). Students who missed the deadline to register for NSO, or students who do not attend NSO, are not eligible to enroll for the academic term in which they applied.

If you feel that you have extenuating circumstances that prevented you from registering for NSO by the deadline or from attending a scheduled NSO program, you may file a NSO Petition for reconsideration. Students should submit the form to the Visitor Information Center WH 245 or orientation@csudh.edu. Please review the form carefully and submit any supporting documentation as one packet. Incomplete forms, or forms submitted without supporting documentation, will not be considered. To request a NSO Petition, email orientation@csudh.edu.

If your NSO Petition is not approved, you may contact (310) 243-3422 to schedule an appointment with a counselor to review your options.
