When is the deadline to apply to walk in the Commencement ceremonies?

The deadline to fill out the participation form and walk in the commencement ceremonies is April 15th.

Is there a fee for the ceremony?

There is no fee for the Commencement Ceremony. If you have paid the graduation fee ($65) when filing for graduation, the commencement fee is included. You will only need to purchase your cap and gown at the CSUDH bookstore.

Who is eligible to participate in the spring 2017 commencement ceremonies?

In order to be eligible to participate in commencement, students must be a degree candidate for Fall 2016, Spring 2017 or Summer 2017.

How long will each ceremony last?

The length of each ceremony will depend on the number of participating graduates. It is anticipated that each ceremony will last two and a half to three hours.

Out of respect for all participants, graduates must stay throughout the entire ceremony and must remain seated unless otherwise directed by commencement staff.

Will graduates be individually recognized?

Yes, we will continue the well-established tradition of having each graduate's name read while he or she walks across the stage to receive a congratulatory handshake and photograph taken with the president.

How many tickets do I get?

Tickets are not required. Each degree candidate may invite an unlimited number of guests. Doors open 90 minutes prior to the ceremony. There is no reserved seating. Guests may hold several seats upon arrival; however, roping off or saving entire rows will not be permitted.

Is parking free?

Yes, parking will be free in both the Campus and StubHub center lots.

Where is Handicap Parking?

Lot #10 (west side of StubHub Center) & Lot #6 (east side of StubHub Center) is for disabled guests with handicap placards. Drop off location is available at the entrance of Stub Hub Center. Enter through Gate A.

Is the StubHub Soccer Stadium wheelchair accessible?

The Stubhub Soccer Stadium is completely accessible by wheelchair for guests or graduating students. For graduating students in a wheel chair, staff and/or volunteers will be available to assist to appropriate staging area. Please go to the Disabled Student Services tent upon arrival. The university does not offer wheelchairs or reserved seating.

What is the difference between Graduation and Commencement?

“Graduation” and “Commencement” are two different terms. “Graduation” means actually finishing and completely fulfilling your degree requirements resulting in a diploma. In other words, “Graduation” is the technical obtainment of credits to receive a degree.“Commencement” is the symbolic ceremony marking the closing of your academic career where you receive commendation for your hard work at CSUDH. It is an opportunity for you, your family, friends, and the CSUDH community to celebrate your accomplishment.

What is GradFair and do I have to attend?

GradFair is a one-stop opportunity for your graduation needs. This year it will be held on Wednesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 2, 2017 inside the Campus Bookstore from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is strongly encouraged you to attend this event but is not mandatory.While at GradFair students will be able to:

  • Receive information about your graduation ceremony
  • Pre-order your cap and gown
  • Purchase graduation announcements, class rings, diploma frames and other grad-related items
  • Join the Alumni Association
  • Learn about and contribute to the Senior Class Gift

Where do I order my Cap and Gown?

You can pre-order your cap and gown during the Commencement Fair, but will also have an opportunity to order is online through Herff Jones.

How do I obtain information about my diploma status?

Diplomas are not issued at the commencement exercises. The process of conferring degrees takes approximately four to six weeks and begins two weeks after grades are submitted at the end of the term.

Can I decorate my cap?

It is completely acceptable to decorate your cap. Please be respectful when decorating your cap, but have fun. Please note that your graduation gown should not be decorated.

What are honors?

To be recognized with academic honors, you must have a qualifying GPA prior to the semester in which ceremonies are held. If you subsequently improve your GPA, graduation honors will be posted on the official record and diploma. You will not, however, be able to acquire an honor cord for the commencement ceremonies. Graduate students are not eligible for honors. To find out if you are receiving academic honors or to purchase a honors cord, please check with the Bookstore at 310-243-3829.

How do I verify my name will be in the printed Commencement program?

If you applied for graduation prior to the April 15th deadline, your name will be printed in the commencement program booklet.

I have two majors. Can I walk with both?

Unfortunately, you cannot walk with both departments. You will need to choose which major you want to walk with at the ceremony. You will walk across the stage when whichever major you choose is called.
