Paralegal Certificate Program at CSUDH CEIEThe Program

This intensive, nationally acclaimed program is designed for beginning as well as advanced legal workers. All classes are online.

What You Will Learn

Students will be trained to assist trial attorneys, interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of the law in which legal assistants are most in demand. There are no prerequisites, but students will be expected to complete a significant amount of homework for each weekly session. This program will help students increase their office’s efficiency, productivity, and billable hours as well as learn new marketable job skills.

Successful graduates of both the core and the advanced courses will be awarded Certificates of Completion for each from CSU Dominguez Hills. To receive a Certificate, students must pass the tests and writing assignments for both the core and advanced courses. Certificates will be mailed to successful graduates within six to eight weeks of completion of each course. These certificates provide an individual with the recognition that he or she has achieved the level of professional knowledge and competency necessary to work within the legal field, and it is designed to satisfy the requirements of California Business Professionals Code §6450.

The Paralegal Certificate Course© offered by CSUDH and The Center for Legal Studies is not approved by the American Bar Association? In the opinion of The Center for Legal Studies, there is no need to seek the approval of the American Bar Association (“ABA”) for any paralegal course of study. That opinion is apparently shared by the vast majority of paralegal programs since most paralegal programs are not ABA approved. The ABA is a voluntary association of lawyers, and recognizing this, only about half of all practicing lawyers are members of the ABA. Not even all law schools have sought ABA approval.

In The Center for Legal Studies' three decades of experience in training and educating paralegals, they have never had one of their graduates contact us and tell us that he or she was not interviewed, or employed as a paralegal by a lawyer or law firm because he or she graduated from this course as opposed to an ABA approved course. The course is sponsored by well-known academic institutions, which are held in high national esteem, so most students actually prefer a Paralegal Certificate from a nationally known and respected school rather than a private, proprietary “Paralegal Institute” which may have paid a large sum of money to receive ABA approval. We have found that the lack of ABA approval has not impacted the job opportunities of their graduates. The Center for Legal Studies is a member of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (“NFPA”) and many of their graduates choose to join as associate members of the ABA or their state bar associations, but, again, these are voluntary memberships.
