Financial Planning

Study abroad is an investment in any student’s future. With proper preparation any student can plan a great study abroad experience that fits their financial needs. Budgeting is one of the most essential steps for study abroad planning.  We recommend that you begin by making your personal budget for study abroad.

Budgeting

Identifying Costs
What is the estimated budget for your prospective study abroad program? Meet with the Study Abroad Financial Aid Advisor to further discuss your program costs and the break down. Don't forget to note if it is a short-term or semester/yearlong program. Use tuition comparison table to help decide.

FAFSA

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Apply before the March 1 deadline, if possible.

  • Confirm financial aid.
Review your aid package and verify with your financial aid counselor what types of financial aid can be applied to your study abroad program. Investigate if aid can be increased due to additional costs associated with study abroad.

  • Assess Current Funding
Compare program costs to your current funding resources (personal savings, parental support, Financial Aid, scholarships, etc.).

  • Plan for Shortages
Make a plan for how you will fund your study abroad experience and explore additional funding options if your program costs more than your current resources.
Meet with a Study Abroad Advisor if you want to discuss budgeting and applying for additional funding, such as Financial Aid and Scholarships.
