Read Lead CDF Freedom Schools program uses model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; nutrition, health and mental health.

Literacy + Leadership = Community Change

With a 10:1 student to teacher ratio, Read Lead scholars will experience a program that will ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in life. During the program Read Lead will also provide opportunities and instruction in Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership; Science and Technology; Arts and Sports; Digital Literacy and Educational field trips.

Our team looks forward to providing an enriching summer educational opportunity for 100 scholars and their families in the communities of Lynwood and Carson July 2 – August 10, 2012.

CSU Dominguez Hills Welcomes
Former L.A. NAACP President Asadullah Samad

On Tuesday, March 20, the California African American Political and Economic Institute at California State University, Dominguez Hills presented, "Constructing Black History in America: An Evolving Critique of Social Construction [PDF] ," a lecture by Anthony Asadullah Samad.

Former L.A. NAACP President Asadullah SamadSamad is the award-winning and bestselling author of “Souls for Sale: The Diary of an Ex-Colored Man,” and “50 Years after Brown: The State of Black Equality in America.” His latest, “Saving the Race: Empowerment through Wisdom,” is a book of affirmations targeting young black males. A national columnist for the past 20 years, he has been a critic of social, political and economic issues that impact American society.

Samad is a past president of the Los Angeles NAACP, and is currently a professor of political science and African American studies at East Los Angeles College. He has a bachelor’s degree in communications from California State University, Los Angeles, a master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California, a second master’s in political economy, and a doctorate degree in political science from the Claremont Graduate University’s School of Politics and Economics.

Delegates participated in exhibits, business roundtables and seminars to present and discuss current bilateral investment and business opportunities in Africa and the African Diaspora. Conference participants explored and addressed the following critical issues:

California Institute of Health & Socials Services, Inc. 8th Annual Teen Summit

CAAPEI sponsored with the California Institute of Health & Socials Services, Inc. (CIHSS, the 8th Annual Teen Summit Event Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 9:00 am- 3:00 pm at California State University Dominguez Hills. The event provided about hundred youths in the foster care system who range from 13 to 19 years old, with general information sessions and workshops on emancipation skills such as financial literacy, goal setting and achievement, educational careers, job preparation and life skills development, as well as identity and social responsibility. Many youth have parents who are incarcerated. Speakers and presenters included CSU Dominguez Hill campus representatives, representatives from California Institute of Health & Socials Services, Inc., and city officials. The event featured a special performance by a musical artist whom was previously in foster care and shared her experiences and success with the youth.

California Black Chamber of Commerce African American Leadership Conference

March 31-April 2, 2011

Dr. Munashe Furusa, who serves as the Executive Director of the California African American Political and Economic Institute (CAAPEI) attended and presented at the California Black Chamber of Commerce African American Leadership Conference on March 31-April 2, 2011. The conference, whose theme was “Moving the Urban Agenda: Expectations, Goals, and Dreams of the Next Generation,” was held in Sacramento California, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel from March 31- April 2, 2011. Dr. Furusa was part of a panel that included Mr. Ron Busby, the president of the United States Black Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey of California Forward and was chaired by Assembly member Steven Bradford representing the 51st District in California legislature. The panel explored the role of government and its impact on the African American community. Participants discussed ways and strategies for engaging the California governance process in order to create opportunities for business growth and community improvement.

Dr. Furusa emphasized the role of the youth in any society’s self-renewal and recreation. He talked about the responsibility of every society to guide the way the young conceive, cultivate and ultimately live their lives. He reminded the audience that, “adults must serve as models of human excellence in Math, Science, technology, arts and culture, business and politics for the future generations.”

He further stated that, “the future of our society depends on its willingness to prepare youth to become partners in public policy and economic development. It depends on our ability to provide cutting edge leadership training programs that will equip the youth with leadership skills and knowledge in the formulation of public policy and the development of local economies.” He urged the elected officials, educators and business leaders to mentor the youth in political leadership and social entrepreneurship.  “This task”, he said, “requires developing partnerships with academic institutions, scholars, politicians, government officials, trade unionists, and business leaders.”

Dr. Furusa called on the conference participants to pool their resources together in order to effectively educate and train the youth to develop and practice leadership skills and styles in relevant and productive learning environments. “This is our most urgent challenge and responsibility,” he said.

Dr. Furusa also appealed to the business community and elected officials to support programs such as “CAAPEI Youth Leadership Training Program” which is committed to preparing the youth for decision and policy-making responsibilities in public and private institutions. He explained that educators, business leaders, and elected officials can support the institute by providing internships, scholarships, grants, and by becoming mentors for high school and college students. “As mentors”, he said, “you will be able to provide the youth with essential knowledge and skills they need to effectively participate in the development of local, national and international economic and community service infrastructures for underdeveloped and underserved communities.”

African Union Ambassador to the US, her Excellency Amina Salum Ali

African Union Ambassador to the USCAAPEI hosted a meeting with the African Union Ambassador to the US, her Excellency Amina Salum Ali in the New University Library Conference Room on May 3, at 8:00am. Also present at the meeting were Dr. Mitch Maki, Dr. Munashe Furusa, Executive Director of CAAPEI, Dr. David Hoopes, Dr. Jim Katzenstein, Mr. David Gamboa, and Mr. Ali Washington, Africa-USA International Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The meeting explored possible bilateral programs and projects between CSU Dominguez Hills and African Institutions and governments, especially in the areas of education, health, youth leadership development, faculty and student exchange, capacity development, business and trade.
