The Academic Technology group at CSUDH continues to add tools and technologies, and processes for improving pedagogy via the application of media technologies and “best practices.”

Accessible Technology and Closed Captioning Services

The Academic Technology unit trains faculty, staff and students in creating instructional materials that are accessible and conduct over a dozen of training sessions during each semester. They also provide support to CSUDH campus community in creating accessible instructional videos and audio files by adding closed captions and transcripts.


Blackboard Collaborate

Collaborate is a web conference tool integrated within the Blackboard LMS, located in the Course Tools section of each class. Instructor users can schedule and host an online virtual class session or meeting. They may also share their desktop screen and files with their students, along with ability to broadcast their webcam video and audio. Students can engage in a real-time chatroom to ask questions if they are not able to communicate through a computer microphone. Instructors can digitally record the session and have it available for students to review within their course page in Blackboard. You can view tutorials here.

Blackboard Learn LMS

Blackboard is the Learning Management System (LMS) for California State University, Dominguez Hills. An LMS is a set of online tools used to digitize, organize and exchange core classroom transactions among students and instructors. Login in to Blackboard here!


Camtasia Studio

Camtasia Studio is a lecture capture tool, similar to TechSmith Relay, but much more robust. Camtasia is aimed at instructors and has simple tools that allow non-linear video editing and the splicing and combining of multiple video clips. Users can add graphics and interactive quizzes in their videos for their students. Captioning and creation of subtitle files (.srt) is also supported. Camtasia Studio integrates with TechSmith Relay, allowing for videos to be published to any of the publishing destinations available in TechSmith Relay. For more information on Camtasia, go here.

Lecture Capture via TechSmith Relay (formerly Camtasia Relay)

Lecture capture is the process of creating video and audio content for any standard, hybrid, or online course. By recording your voice and computer screen, it allows you to digitally record your classroom lecture or presentation. You can record your PowerPoint presentations and computer screen, either in the classroom or at home, and then share them online with your students using TechSmith Relay software. You can view tutorials here.

TechSmith Fuse

TechSmith Fuse is a mobile application for TechSmith Relay users, available for iOS and Android. Users can capture video from their mobile device’s cameras. Users can choose when to upload (cellular or Wi-Fi connection) as well as transfer video to Camtasia Studio wirelessly using Wi-Fi. All profiles and publishing destinations available in TechSmith Relay are available in TechSmith Fuse.


Respondus

The Respondus Campus Wide software allows faculty and staff to seamlessly transfer tests and quizzes between Blackboard and text editing software.

Student Response Solution (iClicker)

iClicker is a student response solution device that allows you to easily transform your classroom into an active learning environment. The software integrates 100% into Microsoft® PowerPoint® and Blackboard. iClicker devices allow audiences and students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to interactive questions.


Toro Student Computer Lab

A general purpose computer lab complex in Library LIB-G149, offering computers with a wide variety of commonly used software. There are 150 Virtual workstations and eight ADA workstations. The complex includes a large open access lab in LIB-G149 that is available for drop-in use. Student lab consultants are on duty in LIB-G149 whenever the lab is open.

Four Instructional Labs are located in Welch Hall that can be reserved for classes.

Turnitin

Provides a service to determine the originality of texts based on comparisons with their internal database and net-wide searches. Turnitin is integrated in our LMS (Blackboard).
