The California STEM Institute for Innovation and Improvement (CSI3) houses multiple STEM projects that) focus on recruiting, training, placing, and supporting STEM teachers. The programs are: Pathways Academy, Master Teacher Fellows (MTF), Transition to Teaching (TTT09 &TTT Online), Urban Teacher Residency (UTR),STEM Teachers in Advanced Residency (STAR), Secondary Special Education Teacher Interventionist project (SSETI), Noyce Scholars Program (NSP), Math and Science Teacher Initiative (MSTI), and Project Reach. These programs support offer financial and academic support to candidates who aspire to become teachers at high need schools within the university’s service area.

The mission of the Center for Innovation in STEM Education (CISE) is to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to the forefront of K-16 education through leadership and service. CISE is a regional center focused on enabling transformative and inspiring STEM learning experiences. Our partnerships with schools, districts, community colleges, local and national organizations, philanthropic and industry leaders serve to broaden our impact across institutions and our local and global community.

The CSUDH Infant-Toddler Development Center is a full-time center-based inclusion program serving young children with typical development from 18-30 months and young children with developmental challenges from 18–36 months. Children may be referred by the Regional Centers for the Developmentally Challenged. The center is also open to children of CSUDH staff, faculty, and students, and to children from the surrounding community. The center is open 5 days a week, 12 months a year, and provides an enriched program that concentrates on skill acquisition, learning through play, and language development, as well as other domains. The center also serves as a practicum site for students at CSUDH and other colleges.

The Center for History-Social Science Education is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in history and social science education. The Center is affiliated with the California History-Social Science Project. The Center provides professional development for K-12 teachers. Historian and other specialists work collaboratively with teachers to improve the teaching and learning of history-social science in the schools.

The Economics Institute at CSUDH aims to lead the South Bay region with innovative and forward-thinking economics education and research. The Economics Institute serves the College of Business Administration and Public Policy faculty and students, as well as community stakeholders by: Developing CSUDH economics curriculum and teaching while incorporating proven high-impact practices; Engaging our diverse student body in economic analysis projects through mentoring programs, guest speakers, and community outreach opportunities; and Facilitating faculty development through economics research resources, grant writing deliverables, and local business and government community engagement.

The mission and purpose of the Merryn Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute (MDAAPEI) is to establish, operate and maintain a relevant center for the continuing study of the dynamics of African American political and economic contributions in California from the 20th century throughout the 21st. MDAAPEI will ultimately become a primary clearinghouse of publicly disseminated information on the subject of the past, present and future of African American political leadership in California; it will become an on-going academic and community research entity particularly dealing with economic and political development issues; it will become an archives for the collection and preservation of the papers and contributions of California political and economic leaders; it will become a facility to coordinate the training of youth for involvement and participation in Californian, and eventually national, public service and politics; and it will become a headquarters for the coordination of conferences, seminars and symposia associated with those co-joined subjects. All such activities will be open to the entire university and to the general public.

The Multicultural Center serves as a focal point on campus for creating intercultural awareness, sensitivity and communication. The Center is a safe haven for individuals and groups to explore not only their own ethnicity but all ethnicities. The Center provides cultural programming, campus community involvement, and volunteer and leadership opportunities for students and staff. Other programs include Diversity Chats, Human Relations retreats, a cultural resource library and opportunities for co-sponsorship with other groups and departments on campus.

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center is designated by the U.S Department of Labor as an OSHA Training Institute Education Center. As an authorized OTIEC, the Center provides health and safety training to the private sector and to federal personnel from agencies outside OSHA. The Center supports OSHA’s training and education mission through a variety of safety and health programs including community outreach efforts, Spanish-language courses, and youth initiatives. Through its extensive training program the Center promotes employee safety and health and enables individuals to incorporate OSHA safety and health practices into their workplaces. The Center administers the OSHA Outreach Trainer program which develops individuals to teach OSHA standards and safety practices. In addition the Center offers a wide range of courses covering such topics as hazardous materials, machine guarding, ergonomics, electrical standards and fall arrest systems. The Center plays a prominent role in curriculum development and provides subject matter expertise germane to local industry. The OSHA Training Institute Education Centers are significant in enabling OSHA “to reach more people in its endeavors to promote safety, reduce injury and illness, and ultimately to save lives.”

Urban Community Research Center (UCRC) is a multidisciplinary applied research center focused on the needs, problems and solutions that arise in urban areas with a special focus on the South Bay Region of the Los Angeles Basin. Goals of the center include conducting high quality research on urban change and social problems; providing social scientific expertise from CSUDH faculty to community-based organizations, governments, and other entities in the South Bay Region and beyond; and creating opportunities for students to receive training through involvement in applied research projects.

The Center for Excellence in Knowledge Management and Computational Science (CECS) is established to bring several disciplines Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Mathematics together in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences (NBS). The Center is used to integrate knowledge and expertise in all the listed disciplines in the College shared facilities. The center is to support programs such as bio-terrorism, network security, bioinformatics and other related areas. The center will have the capacity to build infrastructure and new masters programs. The center will involve a diverse group of NBS faculty and students in the projects. The Faculty and students will come from different disciplines within California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and community colleges in partnership with the University.

The CSUDH Center for Service-Learning, Internships & Civic Engagement (SLICE) is committed to facilitating and fostering quality experiential learning opportunities for students. We support the development of symbiotic relationships among campus, local communities in the Greater Los Angeles/South Bay areas, and global neighbors of the world community. SLICE advocates campus contributions of knowledge and skill which promote the quality of life in these communities. The Center for Teaching Careers supports the undergraduate teacher preparation programs by providing fieldwork coordination. The director maintains relationships with local schools, makes early fieldwork placements for students in Liberal Studies and other undergraduate majors as required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC), and ensures that all students meet minimum requirements prior to placement (i.e. fingerprint clearance, TB).

The Center for Urban Environmental Research (CUER) main purpose is to coordinate, support, and expand urban environmental activities at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). The CUER is a sponsor for CSUDH’s interdisciplinary Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science which prepares students for environmental positions in government, consulting, research, and advanced studies. Through extramural funding the CUER continues to update facilities and acquire instrumentation used for environmental research and education including the campus greenhouse and native species demonstration gardens. The Center provides outreach to students and members of the local community encouraging them to participate in environmentally based scientific inquiry.

The Older Adult Center (OAC) serves as a support system for older students on campus, but provides a warm and friendly atmosphere for people of all ages. Services include a fee waiver program for students over age 60. The OAC also provides many other academic and social opportunities for students, faculty and staff including internships for Graduate program majors and others. Those interested may drop by, sign in at the center, and are welcome to join informal discussion groups.

The Toro Learning Center (T.L.C.) is the university’s primary academic assistance center. Free individual and small group tutoring sessions are provided for currently enrolled CSUDH students. Tutoring sessions focus on helping students improve their various academic and study skills in Writing, Math, and Science related courses. In addition, tutoring in specific subjects is also available. Peer student tutors are available to provide students with useful strategies and suggestions to help them reach their academic goals.

The Public Policy Institute (PPI) at CSUDH was created in 2013 to serve the College of Business Administration and Public Policy and the Department of Public Administration faculty, students and various community stakeholders. One of its primary goals is to lead the greater Los Angeles and South Bay areas in the evolving field of public administration and public policy through relationships with various public sector and non-profit entities at the city, county, state and federal levels. The PPI develops programs to instill interaction and exchange of ideas, teaching, and scholarship among scholars, researchers, students, public administration, and non-profit professionals. The PPI facilitates student engagement at the undergraduate and MPA levels in public administration and non-profit projects through its internships, mentors, symposiums, and community outreach programs. It provides opportunities for faculty development while serving as a feasible research resource. The PPI also provides grant writing options/deliverables and community engagement with close student involvement.
