As Provost, I am pleased to announce after a national search, the appointment of Dr. Gitanjali Kaul as the Associate Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment in the Division of Academic Affairs. Dr. Kaul has worked in many university settings. She will join us from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) where she has served as Vice President of the Division of Strategic Planning since September 2010. Prior to this position, she served at Cleveland State University as Vice Provost for Planning, Assessment and Information Resource Management from 2003-2010 and as Associate Provost for Academic Assessment and Institution Research at Ohio University from 1999 to 2003. As Vice Provost at Cleveland State University, she was responsible for providing leadership, oversight, policy development, and personnel and fiscal management for the office of Strategic Planning, Program Review, Office of Institutional Research, Office of Student Learning Outcomes, Office of Learning Communities, Off-campus Operations, and University Accreditation. Her background includes other appointments at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, the University of Alaska system of Higher Education, and Northern Illinois University; as well as service as FAU’s Liaison Officer to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
In her role as FAU Vice President of Strategic Planning, she has been responsible for Strategic Planning, Institutional Research, Enrollment Management, and Information Technology. This Division was created with the goal of integrating strategic and academic planning. It supported campus growth by creating tight organizational links between strategic planning and enrollment management, which in turn helped to inform important decisions on the future direction of the university. The Division was responsible for creating the specialized data sources and analysis needed for institutional effectiveness. It also identified cutting edge technologies needed for achieving planned results in some of the important areas of the University. Other noted accomplishments include 1) working with the campus community to craft and deliver FAU’s 2012-2017 Strategic Plan: Celebrating and Cultivating Discovery, Diversity, and Distinction; 2) helped doubling FAU’s application in 2011 for freshmen admission from approximately 10,000 to over 19,000; and 3) successfully completing a 2-year campus-wide effort that resulted in the unconditional reaffirmation of FAU by SACS.
A native of New Delhi, India, Dr. Kaul received her Bachelors in Psychology from the University of Delhi in 1977, a Masters of Psychology from Utkal University, Orissa, India in 1979, a Masters in Sociology from Northern Illinois University in 1984 and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology from Northern Illinois in 1990.
In her own words, she said, “I am absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to join California State University, Dominguez Hills. This is a special honor and I am very enthusiastic about joining Provost Junn’s team. I look forward to contributing all I can to support the University’s mission.”
